York County District Attorney's Office Introduce
For residents of Maine, the legal system can seem complex, with many different offices and roles. The District Attorney's Office holds a unique and crucial position within this system. It is not a law firm that a private citizen hires to represent them in a case. Instead, the District Attorney's Office is a public office, led by an elected official, that is responsible for prosecuting all criminal cases that occur within its jurisdiction. For the people of York County, this office is the York County District Attorney's Office, located in Biddeford, Maine. This article will provide an overview of what the District Attorney's Office does and offer practical information about its location and accessibility.
Understanding the role of a District Attorney is essential, especially for anyone who has been a victim of a crime or a witness, or for those who are accused of breaking the law. The office is the legal representative of the state, not of an individual person. Their primary function is to prosecute crimes, from misdemeanors to felonies, with the exception of murder cases, which are handled by the Maine Attorney General's Office. This office works closely with local law enforcement agencies, reviewing cases and making the decision to bring charges against a suspect. They are a critical part of the justice system, working to ensure public safety and upholding the law within their district.
This guide is designed to be informative and factual, helping you understand the function of this important government office. We will cover the specific location in Biddeford, the office's commitment to accessibility, and its general role within the York County legal system. Our goal is to provide a clear and professional resource that can help you navigate and understand this aspect of Maine's legal framework.
The York County District Attorney's Office is located at 208 Graham St, Biddeford, ME 04005, USA. This address is part of the York Judicial Center, a modern facility that consolidates several court-related functions in one place. The location in Biddeford is a central point for the county, making it a more accessible destination for a large portion of York County residents. The building is designed to be efficient and user-friendly for all members of the public who need to interact with the legal system.
For individuals with mobility challenges, accessibility is a critical factor when visiting any public building. The York County District Attorney's Office is well-equipped to accommodate these needs. The facility provides a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, which is a crucial convenience for visitors who use mobility aids. This feature ensures that individuals can park safely and close to the entrance, minimizing travel distance and effort. Additionally, the building has a wheelchair-accessible entrance, ensuring that there are no physical barriers to entry. Once inside, a wheelchair-accessible restroom is also available. These features are standard for a modern judicial center and demonstrate a commitment to providing equal access to public services for all citizens of Maine. The attention to accessibility reflects a professional and respectful approach to serving the public.
As a District Attorney's Office, the services provided are specific to the prosecution of crimes. The office is not a private law firm and does not provide legal representation to individuals in civil matters or defend those accused of crimes. Instead, their work is on behalf of the state of Maine. The services and functions of the office include:
- Prosecuting Criminal Cases: The office is responsible for prosecuting all criminal cases, from low-level misdemeanors to serious felonies, that occur within York County.
- Reviewing Police Reports: They review all criminal reports submitted by local law enforcement agencies to determine if charges should be filed.
- Representing the State in Court: Attorneys from the office represent the state in all court proceedings, including arraignments, plea negotiations, trials, and sentencings.
- Working with Victims and Witnesses: The office has victim-witness advocates who work to support and inform victims and witnesses of crimes throughout the prosecution process.
- Specialized Units: The office may have specialized units, such as those dedicated to domestic violence or juvenile justice, to handle specific types of cases with a higher degree of expertise.
It's important to remember that as a public office, its services are not for hire by the public in the traditional sense. Their role is to uphold the law and seek justice on behalf of the state and the community. If you have been a victim or witness of a crime, law enforcement will typically refer your case to this office for prosecution. If you are a defendant, you are entitled to your own legal counsel, which is separate from the District Attorney's Office.
In a professional public setting like the York County District Attorney's Office, the focus is on providing a functional and accessible environment for all who need to interact with the justice system. The key features and highlights are a testament to this commitment.
- Wheelchair Accessible Facilities: As a modern public building, the office has a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, entrance, and restroom. These are critical features that ensure the building is open and usable for everyone in the community.
- Restroom: The availability of a restroom is a basic but important amenity that adds to the comfort of visitors who may have to spend a significant amount of time at the office or courthouse.
These features, while seemingly straightforward, are foundational to a well-run and respectful public office. They show that the facility is designed with the needs of the community in mind. The office's primary function is its legal role, but the physical environment plays a large part in how that service is delivered. While public reviews may sometimes reflect frustration with the legal or administrative process, the design and amenities of a building are a separate and important consideration.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I am trying to a fine. The women was rude and uncouth from the start. She would not listen to me so she came back and gave me someone else’s personal information. Once I gave her my correct info she said she was unable to access the fines I owe and I need to call back later and speak to a manager. The lack of ability to listen and rudeness is something I haven’t experienced in a long time. The women said she was a temp I think this was an attempt to give me an excuse on why she is unable to do her job.

March 27 · Kris LovellFix your google map listing. What a waste of time trying to find and call this place. Take an hour, two, a day just have one person change it. Only reason we found this place was because of a helpful old man. It’s on the opposite end of the street btw.
