U visas allow victims of certain types of criminal activity to temporarily live and work in the U.S. The intent of U visas is to assist law enforcement in criminal investigations as well as support humanitarian efforts.

Immigrant victims of certain crimes (U visa) or human trafficking (T visa) may qualify for a visa that can lead to Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) status. Similarly, asylees can apply for LPR status after one year of asylee status.
