Legal Rights Center Introduce
When facing legal challenges, particularly criminal charges, having a strong and compassionate advocate on your side is paramount. For many people, the cost of legal representation is a significant barrier to justice. In Minnesota, the Legal Rights Center stands as a community-driven, nonprofit law firm dedicated to addressing this very issue. Their mission is to work with communities to seek justice and promote racial equity for those to whom it has been historically denied. They provide vital legal services, focusing on criminal defense, legal education, and restorative practices, with a strong emphasis on serving low-income individuals and communities of color in Hennepin County.
The Legal Rights Center operates on the principle that everyone, regardless of income, deserves access to high-quality legal representation. Founded in 1970 by Black and American Indian community activists in partnership with legal leaders, the firm was established as an alternative to the public defender's office, which was often overburdened and not held accountable to the specific needs of its clients. This history of community roots and a commitment to social justice continues to define their work today. This overview will provide a clear and factual look at their services, their convenient location, and what makes them a distinct and valuable resource for residents in the Minneapolis area.
Access to legal services begins with a firm's physical location and its commitment to accessibility. The Legal Rights Center is located at 1611 Park Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55404, USA. This address places the firm in the Central neighborhood of Minneapolis, in a location that is convenient for many residents within Hennepin County. Its proximity to major thoroughfares makes it accessible by car, and its urban setting often provides good access to public transportation options, which is a significant benefit for clients who may not have private vehicles.
The firm has made a clear commitment to ensuring its services are physically accessible to all members of the community. The building features a wheelchair accessible entrance, providing a clear path for individuals with mobility challenges. Additionally, they offer a wheelchair accessible parking lot, which simplifies the process of arrival and departure. A wheelchair accessible restroom is also available on-site, ensuring comfort and convenience during your visit. The firm’s professional and welcoming environment is designed to put clients at ease. While they may accept walk-ins, they highly recommend making an appointment. This practice ensures that you receive dedicated time with an attorney or staff member, allowing for a focused and productive discussion about your specific legal problem without the pressure of a waiting room.
The Legal Rights Center specializes in criminal defense and related legal services. As a nonprofit, their case selection guidelines often prioritize specific types of clients and cases, such as youth and first-time adult offenders, and cases that present issues affecting the quality of justice for people of color. They are not able to assist with civil cases, such as housing or family law, but they can often refer you to trusted community partners who handle those matters.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I reached out to this place to get advice on or even to simply get directed to reputable resources on commutations of sentences in MN. I spoke with Leo who continued to over talk me and not even listen to my actual question. He kept pushing me to contact the supervisor of the PD who represented my dad 16 years ago on a closed case or and continued to over talk me to tell me that they can’t help me and to contact the innocence project who I have contacted over the last 16 years about my dad they can’t help. All I was asking for was not to hire a lawyer just simply something reputable and article anything other than the innocence project regarding commutations in MN. Leo became irritated, didn’t even hear me over spoke me. I left the call in tears I don’t know why he had to be so ugly with me.
September 10 · B ThomasHad me waiting for months just to tell me they can’t help with my case “ they had a busy workload “ my trial was push back 7 months .
April 07 · Ajah Enjole’I’m only giving two stars because the staff working in the building when I went for help were amazing. They made me feel hopeful after months of dread. I teared up in front of the person helping me, and they closed their door and gave me tissues. I felt very comfortable and taken care of. I didn’t think they’d help me because nowhere else had. They did say they found someone willing to take on my case, but unfortunately I never received any communication from them. They did file on to my case though, which actually made it more difficult in court when they didn’t show up. The judge was a little confused and didn’t really want to see me when my representation didn’t show up. I convinced them to see me without my representation present. Faith Bickner was then taken off my case by the judge. I do think their mission and what they stand for is great, but it’s unfortunate that the attorneys assigned to help people never reach out and ghost them the day of court. 3 hours later and still have not received a call or text back.I do believe I worked with a person named Ed or something similar, I lost their business card. The thing I remember most about them was their jordans. I just wanted to give them a shout out for helping me out and comforting me even if it didn’t result in any actual legal help. I hope Faith helps the other people she agreed to help so they don’t have to experience what I did.

March 12 · Casey CramerI am glad I asked Legal Rights Center for help after some crime accusations. LRC lawyer Marecca Vertin was always in time for appointments, filing court documents, and court appearances. She also helped me to understand all my legal options. This lead to reaching an acceptable compromise with prosecution, giving me a chance to minimize damage. For me, this is an additional prove that LRC is to help people, but not to make money from people missteps as some paid lawyer do.
