- Child Custody
Child custody refers to the rights and obligations between parents, regarding their children, after a divorce, legal separation, or paternity decree. There are two independent types of custody. Physical custody refers to the amount of time each parent is permitted physically with a child. This may be sole, primary, or joint custody. Legal custody refers to a parent’s decision-making rights regarding a child’s health, education, and welfare. It, too, may be sole, primary, or joint custody.

- Child Support
Regardless of your fight to gain custody of your children, child support will be an issue in your case. You will either be paying it or receiving it. Courts have little discretion in setting the amount of child support to be paid. This is because, as a condition of receiving federal aid, the states are required to follow certain standards in their child support statutes. Although the exact procedures and details vary from state to state, there is a certain basic pattern no matter where you live.

- Establishing Paternity in a Divorce or Child Support Case
When the parents of a child are not married at the beginning of the pregnancy or at the birth of the child, the father is legally without the rights and responsibilities of a parent. The father, mother, or a third party on behalf of the child, must seek a declaration of paternity to legally establish a parent-child relationship with the father. This process gives the father specific custodial rights while imposing upon him a legal obligation to provide specific financial support for the child.

It’s not unusual for ex-spouses to want to change a prior decree respecting issues of custody and support. A party seeking to modify his decree must show a substantial and continuing change of circumstances. Those circumstances may include dramatic changes in income, relocation to another state, or problems relating to the proper care of his minor children. Cordell & Cordell will ensure that, to the extent possible, our clients’ goals are achieved in light of the new circumstances while preserving those rights provided for in prior decrees.

Protection orders are unfortunately common in family law cases and are often used for strategic reasons. The misuse of a protection order when going through a divorce is one of the more prevalent and unfortunate trends in family law. A system that was designed to protect against abuse is itself being abused.

In some instances a wife will ask for alimony, the court-ordered payment of money to your wife after the dissolution of marriage. If you made more money (especially if you were the primary breadwinner), there is a good chance your wife will seek alimony. The bigger the difference in earnings and the longer you were married, the larger the alimony payment will be.

When a couple decides to end their marriage while one spouse is serving in the military, divorce tends to get more complicated. There are specific rules about where to file for divorce, how to calculate child support, how to determine child custody, how to divide retirement benefits, and more that you need to know. At Cordell & Cordell, we understand the unique challenges military families face during divorce. Our attorneys are able to handle these cases to ensure that your rights and the rights of your children are protected.
- Legal Separation
(In states where permitted.) Legal Separation is a court process designed to define the important rights and obligations between spouses when they live apart, but do not want divorce. The decree for legal separation establishes rules between the spouses regarding such issues as child custody, visitation, and spousal maintenance (alimony). It also divides property and usually debt. However, unlike divorce, the marital bonds are not severed and the spouses continue to be husband and wife. If, at any time during the legal separation, or thereafter, either spouse believes that the differences between them are irreconcilable, he or she may file a motion to convert to a dissolution of the marriage.

Cordell & Cordell - Divorce Attorney Office Reviews
Annemarie at Cordell and Cordell definitely worked above and beyond everything I could have asked for. She was the calmness I needed to carry me thru this storm. Kept me informed at all time and always was involved with me thru this process. She made a tough experience easier for me and I’d recommend her and the firm to anyone. Thank you Annemarie for everything you did for me
December 03 · Thomas LairdI was assigned attorney Blair McGehee; approximately 3 years out of law school. Never accept her as your attorney. I requested several times to be assigned a different attorney. The representation was that bad. They charged me a lot of money and overbilled on occasion for duplicate or unnecessary services. Allegedly, she works out of an Annapolis office. However, I believe charges included expenses from Baltimore. I would not recommend this office based on my experience.
May 14 · Mark GadsonCordell & Cordell has been a pleasure to work with. They are very knowledgeable and dedicated to their craft and really gave me comfort during this extremely stressful time. Blair McGehee is a superstar and I couldn’t have asked for better representation!
November 09 · Anthony HookerMy family had been hopeful to have Cordell & Cordell on our side since 2016. We were finally able to retain them recently and the experience was not what we had imagined. In their defense, it was last minute for preparations and the topic was already a bias one in the legal system. We also appreciate the time that our attorney took and their timely responsiveness. However, we felt that our representation was passive and unengaged in the courtroom. We did not feel protected or taken seriously entirely. This could be due to a lack of accrued 'getting to know the client' although we had hoped that caring, would be immediate. We are unsure moving forward but feel that overall, the company has potential and it is possible that we would try again in the future.
July 22 · Halsey BHeard them advertise last week on the radio, and although I had not written a review of my experience when it occurred, I thought I would after hearing their advertisement. In November 2018, I contacted them to set up an appointment, which I attended. On 11/07, I spoke with an in house lawyer about a reduction in child support and my way forward. I was there in the office for approximately 20-25 minutes of the allotted hour I was told. She advised me to send her the divorce decree and separation agreement to investigate further, which I have done so. Since that time I have yet to hear back from her, yet I still paid the full $100. I didn't truly receive any information of value, nor did it seem as though she wanted to move forward. Why was I charged the full price for services that were not what they stated? Additionally, it states, "A Partner Men Can Count On;" however, I left the office that day feeling quite the opposite. Additionally, I contacted both email to follow-up on the email, and via phone, but still heard nothing. As a Veteran who supported this country for you to sit in your cushy office and basically steal money for services not rendered, you should be ashamed.
