If you were arraigned and didn't say a word and never asked for a public defender (or in fact you were not there), that may be ILLEGAL and Unconstitutional. Richard aka Rick told me every public defender is doing it and it's called 'drive thru arraignments'. Don't believe me? What is Worth Choosing

The California Appellate Project is not a typical law firm that a member of the public would hire directly for a case. It is a non-profit organization that plays a critical role within the California legal system. For individuals involved in indigent appellate cases, its worth choosing lies in its function as a supportive and quality-control institution for court-appointed counsel. The organization’s primary purpose is to help ensure that indigent appellants receive the effective representation that the federal and state constitutions guarantee. While a review mentions a highly negative personal experience, it is important to contextualize this feedback within the organization's broader, established function. The reviews also contain an unrelated comment about a hotel, which does not pertain to the legal services provided.

The value of the California Appellate Project comes from its systemic importance. It provides a robust support system for private attorneys who take on the often challenging and resource-intensive work of indigent appeals. By offering legal resources, training, and supervision, CAP helps elevate the quality of representation across the board. The organization's focus on areas like reentry support also highlights a commitment to holistic justice, recognizing that a person's legal journey doesn't end with a court decision. The fact that the organization has been a long-standing partner with the California Court of Appeal for the Second District demonstrates its consistent and recognized role in the legal community. For those navigating the appellate process for indigent defendants in California, CAP is a fundamental component that helps uphold the principles of fair representation, making it a critical and worthwhile resource.
